New 2027 Audi RS5: Hybrid Power, Drift Ready, and Heading to the US?
The German automaker has unveiled its latest high-performance machine, and for the first time, it pairs Quattro all-wheel drive with cutting-edge electro-mechanical torque vectoring.

For decades, Audi Sport has been synonymous with high-performance all-wheel-drive wagons, dating back to the legendary 1994 RS2 Avant, a collaboration that set the benchmark for the segment. After years of overlooking the United States market, Audi finally brought an RS Avant wagon to our shores with the C8-generation RS6 Avant. Its surprising success in a nation that has traditionally favored SUVs over long-roofed vehicles has understandably ignited our hopes for more. This anticipation is reaching a fever pitch with the recent announcement of the 2027 Audi RS5, which is expected to join the existing A5 and S5 hatchback sedans in the lineup.
Plug-in Hybrid Performance: A New Era for the RS5
The new RS5 carries forward the legacy of its predecessor by utilizing a potent 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 engine. However, Audi has significantly elevated its performance credentials for this generation. In this application, the engine produces a formidable 503 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque, marking a substantial increase of 66 horsepower over the previous model’s 444 horsepower output. While the torque figure remains comparable, Audi attributes these gains to a suite of technological enhancements. These include the implementation of two variable-geometry turbochargers, which optimize boost across the rev range, increased injection pressures for more precise fuel delivery, and a shorter, less restrictive intake system designed to improve airflow. Furthermore, the adoption of Miller cycle combustion technology allows the new RS5 engine to achieve up to 20 percent better fuel efficiency under high-load conditions, a remarkable feat for a vehicle in this performance category. As is customary for the RS5 lineage, the powertrain is paired with Audi’s renowned Quattro all-wheel-drive system and a responsive eight-speed automatic transmission.
The transmission and a limited-slip differential work in tandem to distribute torque between the front and rear axles within a flexible range of 70/30 to 15/85. This dynamic allocation allows the RS5 to bias power to the front wheels when maximum traction is required, or primarily drive the rear wheels for high-performance driving scenarios. This capability firmly establishes the RS5 as an Audi that is genuinely fun to drive, even capable of executing controlled drifts. The center differential features a preload mechanism, ensuring it remains partially locked at all times to enhance traction and handling precision.
Electrifying the RS Lineage: The Hybrid Powertrain
In a significant departure from previous generations, the new RS5 marks the first time Audi has integrated an electric motor with the engine of an RS model. This innovative plug-in hybrid powertrain represents a new chapter in the evolution of the RS5. The twin-turbo V-6 engine is complemented by an electric motor that develops an impressive 175 horsepower and 339 pound-feet of torque. When combined, these power sources deliver a staggering peak system output of 630 horsepower and 608 pound-feet of torque. This output places the new RS5 in elite company, positioning it as a direct competitor to the Mercedes-AMG E53 PHEV, which produces 604 horsepower and 554 pound-feet of torque. Audi claims an acceleration time of 0 to 62 mph in 3.6 seconds, a figure that we suspect is a conservative estimate given the previous generation RS5 Sportback’s ability to achieve 0 to 60 mph in the same timeframe.
The electric motor draws its power from a battery with a substantial total capacity of 25.9 kWh, of which 22.0 kWh is usable for propulsion. This substantial battery capacity enables the new RS5 to achieve an impressive all-electric driving range of up to 54 miles in city driving conditions. The vehicle’s electrical system operates on 400-volt architecture, allowing for a maximum AC charging speed of 11 kW, which translates to a full charge from empty in approximately 2.5 hours. Notably, Audi has eliminated the traditional 12-volt starter motor in this generation. This is made possible by the redundancy provided by the new electric motor, which now serves the dual purpose of providing propulsion and starting the RS5’s gasoline engine.
Optimizing Performance: Battery Management and Cooling
To achieve peak power output and maximize the effectiveness of the torque vectoring system, the RS5’s battery must be charged to a minimum of 90 percent when utilizing the RS Sport and RS Torque Rear drive modes. While this requirement may seem like a compromise for a plug-in hybrid vehicle, Audi has engineered the system to intelligently manage and conserve battery charge when configured in these high-performance drive modes. A sophisticated network of pumps, fans, and heat exchangers works in concert to maintain the battery’s temperature at an optimal 68 degrees Fahrenheit, ensuring consistent performance under demanding driving conditions.
The battery’s energy output extends beyond the electric motor. With its placement beneath the trunk floor, the battery cells also supply up to 8 kW of power to the permanent-magnet synchronous motor that underpins the sedan and wagon variants’ new electro-mechanical torque-vectoring system. Audi has branded this advanced technology as Dynamic Torque Control. This system actively redistributes torque between the rear wheels through a sophisticated mechanism involving an actuator, overdrive gears, and a differential. The system’s control unit processes recalculations and makes adjustments at an astonishing frequency of 200 Hz, meaning changes to torque distribution occur once every five milliseconds, enabling near-instantaneous adjustments to optimize handling and stability.
Chassis and Suspension Upgrades for the Ultimate Driving Experience
Beyond the revolutionary powertrain, the new RS5 benefits from a comprehensive suite of chassis upgrades designed to deliver an exceptional driving experience. The vehicle features RS-specific front and rear axles, providing a more robust and precisely tuned foundation. Complementing this is an RS sport suspension system equipped with twin-valve shock absorbers and active dampers, which continuously adjust to road conditions and driving inputs. The steering system in the RS5 has also been meticulously tuned to provide a distinct feel and response that is separate from the standard A5 and S5 models. This ensures that the RS5 offers a level of driver engagement and precision commensurate with its performance credentials.
To accommodate the increased performance capabilities, Audi offers two wheel size options: 20-inch and 21-inch wheels. These wheels can be fitted with either standard steel brakes or the available carbon-ceramic brakes, which provide superior stopping power and heat dissipation for track-focused driving.
Dimensions, Packaging, and Customization Options
In typical Audi fashion, the 2027 RS5’s bodywork has been significantly widened, increasing the vehicle’s width by 3.5 inches and creating a muscular, fender-flared aesthetic that announces its performance intentions. The hatchback-sedan body style tips the scales at a substantial 5,192 pounds, while the Avant variant weighs in at 5,225 pounds. These figures represent a significant increase of over 1,000 pounds compared to the last RS5 Sportback we tested, which weighed 4,103 pounds. This added weight is primarily attributable to the new plug-in hybrid powertrain components, including the larger battery pack.
The front fascia is dominated by a model-specific interpretation of Audi’s iconic single-frame grille, which features a honeycomb pattern and is flanked by aerodynamic air curtains that help manage airflow around the vehicle. At the rear, both RS5 variants are distinguished by a pronounced diffuser and Audi Sport’s signature ovular exhaust tips, which provide a clear visual cue to the car’s high-performance nature. The exterior lighting features a distinctive checkered-flag pattern, further emphasizing the RS5’s motorsport DNA. A palette of nine paint colors is available, including striking options such as Ascari Blue, Mythos Black, and Progressive Red, allowing customers to personalize their vehicle’s appearance.
Inside the cabin, the new RS5 receives the same sophisticated single-pane digital interface that has become a hallmark of modern Audi interiors. This unit houses a 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster and a generously sized 14.5-inch touchscreen display. Setting the RS5 apart from the standard A5 and S5 models, the performance variant includes specialized software for route analytics, sector timing capabilities for racetrack use, and drift-angle logging functionality, catering to the driving enthusiast. Additionally, the passenger-side touchscreen provides access to performance-logging applications, allowing co-pilots to monitor and analyze driving data.
For customers seeking an even more aggressive and track-focused configuration, the available Audi Sport package offers a comprehensive suite of enhancements for both the Avant and sedan models. This package includes bespoke front and rear bumpers, Phantom Black 21-inch wheels with a matte finish, RS ceramic brakes with striking bronze-colored calipers, and carbon camouflage accents that add a premium, technical aesthetic. The Audi Sport package also integrates an RS sport exhaust system, which further amplifies the vehicle’s auditory character, and increases the electronically limited top speed to 177 mph. Inside the cockpit, the Audi Sport package further elevates the sense of occasion with exclusive Serpentine Green and Brass contrast stitching, creating a vibrant and luxurious ambiance.
