Full story: T2506021_Reuniting Heartbroken Mother Horse Her Lost Foal 2027 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport & Grand Sport X: The Sweet Spot Returns with a New V-8 Heartbeat
For years, the Chevrolet Corvette team has been pushing the boundaries of American sports car engineering, delivering heart-pounding performance that rivals the best from Europe and Japan. From the screaming 8,600-rpm Z06 to the hypercar-slaying 1,250-hp ZR1X, the C8 generation has redefined what a Corvette can be. Now, as the ZR1X production ramps up, Chevy is introducing not one, but two new models that promise to blend performance and value in a way that hasn’t been seen since the original Grand Sport era: the 2027 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport and the track-focused Grand Sport X. These new additions to the Corvette lineup don’t compete with the extreme power of the ZR1 brothers. Instead, they focus on delivering a pure driving experience that splits the difference between the standard Stingray and the hardcore Z06. The centerpiece of this new formula is the brand-new LS6 small-block V-8, a 6.7-liter naturally aspirated monster that pumps out a staggering 535 horsepower. This engine, combined with chassis refinements and go-fast parts borrowed from the Z06, creates a compelling package that could very well be the sweet spot of the entire Corvette lineup. A Winning Recipe, Reimagined for 2027 The Grand Sport nameplate carries a storied legacy in the Corvette pantheon. Since the C6 generation debuted in 2010, the Grand Sport has been the enthusiast’s choice—a road-oriented rig that perfectly balances track capability with everyday usability. The 2027 iteration honors this tradition by combining the Stingray’s new 6.7-liter V-8 with the Z06’s wide-body stance and several of its performance-enhancing components. Based on our experience with every other C8 variant, we have every reason to believe the Grand Sport will be a truly exceptional sports car that redefines value in the performance segment. The headline news, of course, is the introduction of the first-ever Grand Sport X. Building on the same successful formula, the X elevates the Grand Sport concept by incorporating hybrid technology and all-wheel drive. Using the same core components as the 1,250-hp ZR1X, the Grand Sport X adds a 186-hp electric motor to the front axle and a compact 1.9-kWh lithium-ion battery mounted in the tunnel between the driver and passenger. This configuration transforms the rear-drive Grand Sport into a potent all-wheel-drive hybrid, with a combined output of 721 horsepower. That’s a remarkable 66-hp increase over the outgoing Corvette E-Ray, positioning the Grand Sport X as a legitimate track weapon capable of challenging exotic supercars. Chevorlet’s Small-Block V-8: Bigger, Stronger, and Ready to Roar At the heart of both the Grand Sport and Grand Sport X lies the new LS6 V-8, a name that harkens back to the legendary Corvette Z06 models of the 1960s and early 2000s. This marks the sixth generation of Chevrolet’s iconic small-block design, and it represents a significant departure from the previous LT2 engine found in the Stingray. The engineers at Chevrolet have embraced the adage “There’s no replacement for displacement,” expanding the V-8’s capacity from 6.2 liters to a formidable 6.7 liters. This displacement increase is achieved by lengthening the stroke from the previous 92 mm to a robust 100 mm, while maintaining the signature 4.4-inch bore spacing that has defined the small-block since its inception. The result is a torque monster that eclipses its predecessor. Compared to the LT2, the LS6 delivers 40 more horsepower and an additional 50 lb-ft of torque, with a peak output of 520 lb-ft arriving earlier in the rev range at 4,600 rpm. This low-end grunt provides the Grand Sport with an immediacy and responsiveness that’s intoxicating, whether carving through canyon roads or launching off the line at a drag strip. The LS6 also benefits from a significant increase in compression, rising to a demanding 13.0:1 from the LT2’s 11.5:1. This higher ratio, combined with the addition of port fuel injection for improved emissions control, creates an engine that’s both more powerful and more efficient. To handle the increased stresses of this high-compression design, Chevrolet has upgraded the pistons and connecting rods to forged components. This not only ensures reliability at high revs but also provides a solid foundation for aftermarket tuners looking to extract even more performance from this already potent powerplant. The sound of the LS6 is pure American muscle, evolved for the modern era. At startup, the engine barks to life with a deep, authoritative rumble that commands attention. At idle, it settles into a menacing burble, hinting at the power lurking beneath the engine cover. As the revs climb, the LS6 transitions into a feral snarl, a symphony of combustion that’s both thrilling and addictive. Chevrolet offers two exhaust options for the LS6. The standard setup features four tips split between the left and right sides of the car, while the optional system consolidates all four tips into a striking center-exit configuration. While both systems incorporate active valves to manage sound levels, our initial exposure to the car revealed that the center-exit exhaust delivers a more immersive and aggressive auditory experience—the one serious driving enthusiasts will undoubtedly gravitate towards.
What Makes a Grand Sport a Grand Sport? A Legacy of Balance The Grand Sport and Grand Sport X will be available in two distinct body styles: the traditional targa-topped “coupe” and the open-air folding hardtop convertible. Both variants feature Chevrolet’s advanced MagneRide adaptive dampers as standard equipment, providing a seamless blend of ride comfort and handling precision. Power is delivered through the lightning-fast Tremec eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, which has been optimized for the Grand Sport with a new 5.56:1 final drive ratio. This more aggressive gearing, also adopted by the 2027 Stingray with the optional Z51 package, enhances acceleration at the expense of fuel economy, but for Grand Sport buyers, the trade-off is more than worth it. The rear-drive Grand Sport offers three distinct chassis configurations to suit a range of driving preferences. The standard setup is tuned for touring, pairing the MagneRide dampers with all-season Michelin Pilot Sport tires for comfortable road use. Stepping up to the Sport Performance package introduces a stiffer suspension tune and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer tires, providing sharper turn-in and enhanced grip. This package also incorporates the Z06’s J56 brakes, treated with a high-temperature ferritic nitro carburizing process that significantly improves corrosion resistance—a critical upgrade for drivers who plan to push their cars hard. For the ultimate track experience, the Track Performance package mirrors the Z06’s Z07 upgrade. It features Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, carbon-ceramic brakes, a prominent carbon-fiber rear wing and dive planes for increased downforce, a unique chassis tune, and the aforementioned center-exit exhaust. The standard forged wheels come in four stylish finishes, with optional carbon-fiber wheels available on cars equipped with carbon-ceramic brakes. These lightweight wheels further reduce unsprung mass, improving handling and responsiveness when every tenth of a second counts. The Grand Sport X takes a more aggressive approach, making carbon-ceramic brakes standard equipment to handle its prodigious power. Similar to the standard Grand Sport, the X offers both a touring suspension on all-season tires and a Performance suspension tune with summer tires. However, in a move that has piqued our interest, Chevrolet has confirmed that the Grand Sport X will not be offered with a Track package or carbon-fiber aero kit. When asked for an explanation, executive chief engineer Tony Roma simply advised us to “stay tuned,” hinting at future developments that could further enhance the X’s track capabilities. Visually, both the Grand Sport and Grand Sport X proudly display the requisite hash stripes on their front fenders, a nod to their heritage. However, for this generation, the stripes are relocated to the rear fenders, creating a fresh and modern aesthetic. The 2027 Corvette Grand Sport: A Masterclass in Balance The 2027 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport and Grand Sport X are slated to go on sale this summer, with the Grand Sport X following in the fall. For the initial model year, Chevrolet will offer a limited-edition Launch Edition for both variants. These special models will feature a striking blue-dipped leather interior with contrasting red stitching and accents, creating a cabin that’s both luxurious and race-inspired. While Chevrolet has yet to announce official pricing, Roma let slip that the Grand Sport will start under $100,000. This positioning places it in a fascinating space in the market, offering supercar-level performance and handling for significantly less than its European competitors. Based on Chevrolet’s track record with the C8 generation, we can confidently predict that the Grand Sport will deliver exceptional value compared to pretty much anything else you can buy at that price point.
We have a clear picture of where the Grand Sport will land in terms of pricing, performance, and positioning within the Corvette hierarchy. Based on the exceptional capabilities of every other C8 variant we’ve tested, we can even anticipate how the Grand Sport will drive—and we’
