The Corvette team has been pushing the envelope for years, and they show no signs of slowing down. Even after unleashing the 8,600-rpm Z06, the 1,064-hp ZR1, and the hypercar-slaying, 1,250-hp ZR1X, the brilliant minds and speed enthusiasts behind America’s premier sports car are still rolling out new models. With ZR1X deliveries just beginning, Chevrolet has introduced not one, but two new Corvette variants.

The 2026 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport and Grand Sport X may not match the insane power output of the ZR1 models, but they are designed to round out the Corvette sports car lineup with something special at a more accessible price point. Drawing from historical precedent, the Grand Sports are poised to be driver-focused machines that strike a balance between the base Corvette Stingray and the high-performance Corvette Z06. Equally significant is the debut of Chevy’s new LS6 small-block V-8, a 6.7-liter naturally aspirated powerhouse generating 535 horsepower.
A Winning Formula with a New Twist
Since the C6 Corvette debuted in 2010, the Grand Sport designation has served as a sort of insider’s nod—a road-oriented package that arguably offers the best balance of performance and value in the Corvette range. True to this legacy, the 2026 Grand Sport pairs the Corvette Stingray’s new 6.7-liter V-8 with the Z06’s wide-body architecture and several of its performance-oriented options. This combination has proven successful in the past, and given how every other iteration of the C8 Corvette performs, there’s every reason to anticipate that the Grand Sport will be a truly exceptional sports car.

The first-ever Grand Sport X takes this concept further, utilizing the same foundational formula—and many of the same part numbers—that allow the 1,250-hp ZR1X to outperform the 1,064-hp ZR1. An electric motor positioned between the front wheels, generating 186 horsepower, combined with a 1.9-kWh lithium-ion battery housed in the tunnel between the driver and passenger, transforms the rear-drive Grand Sport into an all-wheel-drive hybrid. This setup, coupled with the mid-mounted 535-hp gasoline engine, yields a combined output of 721 horsepower, a 66-hp increase over the 655-hp Corvette E-Ray it replaces. Early projections suggest 0–60 mph times in the low two-second range and quarter-mile runs in the low 10s.
Chevy’s Small-Block V-8 Expands in Size
Chevrolet has christened the Corvette’s new V-8 the LS6, a nod to the fact that this marks only the sixth generation of the small-block engine. It’s worth noting that Chevrolet has produced more generations of the small-block since 1955 than there have been Catholic Popes, so for devotees of the naturally aspirated V-8, this news warrants a celebratory burnout and a plume of white smoke—a new benchmark has arrived.

The LS6 embodies the classic engineering adage, “There’s no replacement for displacement.” To achieve this, Chevrolet engineers increased the Corvette’s engine displacement from 6.2 to 6.7 liters by extending the stroke from 92 to 100 millimeters. The bore diameter and the traditional 4.4-inch bore spacing, a hallmark of the small-block since its inception, remain unchanged. This increased stroke translates to a more substantial torque increase, even beyond the gain in horsepower. Relative to the outgoing LT2 V-8 in the Corvette Stingray, the LS6 delivers an additional 40 horsepower and 50 lb-ft of torque. It produces more torque than any other naturally aspirated V-8 currently in production, with a peak of 520 lb-ft arriving earlier in the rev range at 4,600 rpm.
The new engine operates with a 13.0:1 compression ratio, a notable increase from the previous 11.5:1, and incorporates port fuel injection to mitigate particulate emissions. To withstand the higher stresses of the LS6, the pistons and connecting rods are now forged—a welcome development for tuners and performance enthusiasts who will undoubtedly push this new small-block even further.
The engine’s auditory signature is striking, starting with a fierce bark upon startup, transitioning to a deep burble at idle, and culminating in a feral snarl as the revs climb. Chevrolet will offer two exhaust configurations for the LS6. The standard system routes four exhaust tips between the left and right sides of the Corvette, while the optional system consolidates all four tips at the center of the car. Both configurations feature active valves to regulate the engine’s sound and volume, with no impact on power output. However, Chevy engineers indicate a perceptible difference in their acoustic character (our experience has been limited to hearing the car at full song through the optional exhaust). The center exhaust appears to be the preferred choice.
What Defines a Grand Sport?
The Grand Sport and Grand Sport X will be available in both targa-topped “coupe” configurations and folding-hardtop convertible variants. Magnetorheological (MagneRide) dampers and an electronically controlled limited-slip differential are standard equipment. Power is delivered through the Tremec eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and a new 5.56:1 final drive ratio. This more aggressive gearing enhances acceleration while reducing fuel efficiency. This revised gearing will also be integrated into the 2026 Corvette Stingray when equipped with the optional Z51 package, which previously utilized a 5.13:1 ratio.

The rear-wheel-drive Grand Sport will be offered with three distinct chassis configurations. The standard Touring setup provides the smoothest ride and is paired with Michelin Pilot Sport All Season tires. The Sport Performance package features a firmer suspension and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer tires, in addition to the Z06’s J56 brakes, which benefit from a high-temperature ferritic nitro carburizing treatment to enhance corrosion resistance. Finally, the Track Performance package mirrors the Z06’s Z07 upgrade, incorporating Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, carbon-ceramic brakes, a carbon-fiber rear wing and dive planes, a unique chassis calibration, and a center-exit exhaust. The standard forged wheels are available in four different finishes, with carbon-fiber wheels offered as an option on vehicles equipped with carbon-ceramic brakes.
The Grand Sport X comes standard with carbon-ceramic brakes to manage its formidable power output. Similar to the Grand Sport, Chevrolet will offer a Touring suspension on all-season tires or a Performance suspension tune with summer tires. However, there is no Track package or carbon-fiber aero kit available for the X. When questioned about this, executive chief engineer Tony Roma offered a cryptic, “Stay tuned.” All Grand Sports retain the signature fender hash marks, though uniquely positioned at the rear for this generation.

Is This the Ideal Balance of Performance and Value?
The Grand Sport is slated to go on sale in the summer of 2026, with the Grand Sport X following in the fall. Both variants will be available in a Launch Edition for the inaugural model year, featuring a striking blue-dipped leather interior with red stitching and accents.
While Chevrolet has yet to announce official pricing, Mr. Roma indicated that the Grand Sport will have a starting price below $100,000. This positioning virtually guarantees it will represent exceptional value compared to nearly any other vehicle available at that price point.
Our understanding of the Grand Sport’s pricing, performance metrics, and market positioning is quite clear. Based on the characteristics of every previous C8 Corvette iteration, we can already anticipate its driving dynamics, which generates considerable excitement for the opportunity to get behind the wheel. The Corvette Grand Sport and Grand Sport X appear to offer the most accessible pathway to experience the essence of Chevrolet’s most specialized Corvette models without incurring the substantial cost associated with the Z06, ZR1, or ZR1X.
