What We Got and How We Used It
One of the key factors that helped the BMW M2 secure its Performance Vehicle of the Year award was its exceptional standard equipment. Unlike some competitors that leave you wanting, BMW loads the M2 with virtually every performance upgrade you could reasonably desire. Under the hood resides a potent 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six engine, churning out a formidable 473 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a satisfyingly tactile six-speed manual gearbox (or a still-impressive 443 lb-ft with the optional eight-speed automatic). An electronically controlled limited-slip differential ensures that power is deployed with precision, while six-piston 15.0-inch front and 14.6-inch floating Brembo brakes provide stopping power that borders on telekinetic. Pros and Cons After a Year of Daily Driving
Throughout its tenure with us, our 2025 BMW M2 demonstrated a remarkable ability to adapt to any situation. On long road trips, it proved to be a comfortable and composed companion, effortlessly gobbling up miles while maintaining enough responsiveness to dispatch slow-moving traffic without needing to drop from sixth gear. Around town, the M2 felt small, nimble, and refreshingly easy to park—a welcome trait in congested urban environments. Yet, it always seemed to have room for our editors and their cargo, whether that meant schlepping beer-league hockey bags to the rink, hauling a last-minute Super Bowl weekend TV purchase, or simply loading up on groceries, passengers, and the occasional pet.
And on a truly engaging stretch of road? The M2 transformed. It became a scalpel-sharp, visceral, and utterly exhilarating machine. Despite its many virtues, the M2 wasn’t without its quirks. Storage space up front for keys, wallets, and water bottles was noticeably limited, forcing us to get creative with our organization strategies. Water bottles were often relegated to the gap between the seat bolster and the door panel, while cellphones and charging cords found refuge wedged between the inboard bolster and the center console. This latter arrangement was particularly necessary on longer journeys, as the M2’s wireless phone charger, located in the center console, had a tendency to overheat devices after about an hour of use. The other persistent annoyance stemmed from the high-performance brake pads BMW specifies for the M2. These pads had a penchant for emitting rather embarrassing squeals when dirty. Our solution became a ritualistic car wash before any extended road trip, ensuring the brakes were clean and quiet for the miles ahead.
Toward the very end of our loan period, we encountered an intermittent “Emergency call system malfunction” warning on the instrument cluster. Relative to other high-performance vehicles we’ve tested recently, our current Acura Integra Type S has yet to incur any service or maintenance costs, and according to Tire Rack, a new set of tires for that vehicle would run around $1,576 before mounting and balancing.
