Full story: T2506019_Rescue stray cat The 2027 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport and Grand Sport X: Redefining the Sweet Spot in American Sports Cars
For a decade, the Corvette team has been operating at a sustained, blistering pace, and that momentum shows no signs of abating. Even after unleashing the high-revving, 8,600-rpm Z06, the supercharged, 1,064-hp ZR1, and the hypercar-slaying, 1,250-hp ZR1X, Chevrolet continues to expand its legendary sports car lineup. As ZR1X deliveries are only just beginning to reach customers, the brilliant minds behind America’s sports car have unveiled not one, but two new Corvette models: the 2027 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport and the Grand Sport X. While the Grand Sports may not possess the berserk power levels of their ZR1 siblings, they are engineered to fill a crucial gap in the Corvette sports car hierarchy, offering something truly special at a more attainable price point. If history is any guide, the Grand Sports will embody the quintessential driver’s car, expertly balancing performance and value between the base Corvette Stingray and the track-focused Corvette Z06. Perhaps even more significant than the cars themselves is the fact that the Grand Sports mark the debut of Chevrolet’s new LS6 small-block V-8—a 6.7-liter naturally aspirated powerhouse generating a formidable 535 horsepower. A Proven Recipe with a Bold New Formula Since the introduction of the C6 Corvette in 2010, the Grand Sport designation has represented a sort of secret handshake among Corvette enthusiasts—a road-oriented rig that arguably strikes the perfect balance between performance and value in the entire Corvette lineup. True to this enduring tradition, the 2027 Grand Sport seamlessly integrates the Corvette Stingray’s new 6.7-liter V-8 with the Z06’s wide-body architecture and several of its high-performance options. This has proven to be a winning formula in the past, and based on the exceptional driving dynamics of every other C8 Corvette variant, there is every reason to believe the Grand Sport will be a truly exceptional sports car. The inaugural Grand Sport X builds upon this proven concept, utilizing the same formula—and several of the exact same part numbers—that propels the 1,250-hp ZR1X to dominate the 1,064-hp ZR1. An 186-hp electric motor positioned between the front wheels, coupled with a 1.9-kWh lithium-ion battery housed within the tunnel between the driver and passenger, transforms the rear-wheel-drive Grand Sport into an all-wheel-drive hybrid. When combined with the mid-mounted 535-hp gasoline engine, the all-wheel-drive X unleashes a staggering 721 horsepower—a 66-hp increase over the outgoing 655-hp Corvette E-Ray. Industry insiders predict 0–60 mph times in the low two-second range and quarter-mile runs dipping into the low 10s, positioning the Grand Sport X as a legitimate contender in the elite hypercar category. Chevrolet’s Small-Block V-8 Evolves: Bigger Displacement, More Power Chevrolet has christened the Corvette’s new V-8 the LS6, paying homage to the fact that this is only the sixth generation of the iconic small-block engine family. As any automotive historian will note, there have been more Catholic church popes than Chevy small-blocks since the original’s introduction in 1955. Therefore, for those who worship at the altar of the naturally aspirated V-8, this moment calls for a celebratory burnout and a plume of white smoke, signaling the arrival of a new king. The LS6 represents the modern embodiment of the timeless adage, \”There’s no replacement for displacement.\” Chevrolet engineers have enlarged the Corvette’s heart from 6.2 to 6.7 liters by increasing the stroke length from 92 to 100 millimeters. Intriguingly, there are no changes to the bore or the 4.4-inch bore spacing that has been a signature of the small-block design since its inception. This extended stroke has resulted in a more substantial torque increase, even surpassing the gains in horsepower. Compared to the Corvette Stingray’s outgoing LT2 V-8, the LS6 delivers an additional 40 horsepower and 50 lb-ft of torque. It generates more torque than any other naturally aspirated V-8 currently in production, peaking at a robust 520 lb-ft, which arrives earlier in the rev range at 4,600 rpm, providing exhilarating low-end grunt. The new engine operates with a higher compression ratio of 13.0:1, up from the LT2’s 11.5:1. To address the increased stresses and emissions requirements, port fuel injection has been integrated to improve particulate emissions. Furthermore, the pistons and connecting rods have been upgraded to forged components, a boon for the legions of aftermarket tuners and hot rodders who will inevitably seek to extract even more performance from this remarkable new small-block.
The engine’s auditory signature is nothing short of spectacular. It unleashes a fierce bark at startup, transitions to a deep, resonant burble at idle, and culminates in a feral snarl as the revs climb. Chevrolet will offer two distinct exhaust systems for the LS6. The standard configuration splits the four exhaust tips between the left and right sides of the vehicle, while the optional system clusters all four tips in the center of the car. Both systems feature active valves to modulate the engine note and volume, although Chevy engineers confirm there is a discernible difference in their acoustic profiles. Based on initial listening impressions, the center-exit exhaust is the clear choice for enthusiasts seeking the most dramatic sound experience. Unpacking the Grand Sport DNA: What Defines This Special Corvette? Both the Grand Sport and Grand Sport X will be available in two distinct body styles: the targa-topped \”coupe\” and the folding-hardtop convertible. Standard equipment includes Magneti Marelli-sourced MagneRide dampers and an electronically controlled limited-slip differential, ensuring optimal handling and traction. Power is channeled through the Tremec eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, which now features a more aggressive 5.56:1 final drive ratio. This shorter gearing will enhance acceleration, albeit at the expense of fuel economy. This revised final drive ratio will also be available on the 2027 Corvette Stingray, specifically with the optional Z51 package, which previously utilized a 5.13:1 ratio. The rear-wheel-drive Grand Sport will be offered with three distinct chassis configurations to cater to a wide range of driving preferences. The standard touring setup provides the softest ride quality, paired with Michelin Pilot Sport All Season tires for year-round usability. The Sport Performance package introduces a stiffer suspension tune and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer tires, along with the Z06’s J56 brakes, which benefit from a high-temperature ferritic nitro carburizing treatment to enhance corrosion resistance. Finally, the Track Performance package mirrors the Z06’s Z07 upgrade, incorporating Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, carbon-ceramic brakes, a carbon-fiber rear wing and dive planes, a specialized chassis tune, and the aforementioned center-exit exhaust. The standard forged wheels are available in four different finishes, with carbon-fiber wheels offered as an option on vehicles equipped with carbon-ceramic brakes. The Grand Sport X elevates the performance bar by making carbon-ceramic brakes standard equipment, essential for managing its formidable power output. Similar to the standard Grand Sport, Chevy will offer a touring suspension on all-season tires or a Performance suspension tune with summer tires. However, notably, there is no Track package or carbon-fiber aero kit available for the X. When queried about this omission, executive chief engineer Tony Roma cryptically advised the press to \”stay tuned,\” hinting at future possibilities. Rounding out the Grand Sport’s signature styling, all models feature the requisite hash stripes on the front fenders, albeit positioned exclusively at the rear for this generation. The Quest for the Perfect Balance: Performance Meets Value in 2026 The Grand Sport is slated to go on sale in the summer of 2026, with the Grand Sport X following in the fall. For the initial model year, both versions will be available as a special Launch Edition, distinguished by a striking blue-dipped leather interior featuring contrasting red stitching and accents. While Chevrolet has yet to officially announce pricing, Roma confirmed that the Grand Sport will start under the $100,000 mark. This positions it as an exceptional value proposition compared to virtually any other performance vehicle available at this price point. The automotive landscape of 2026 is fiercely competitive, with European manufacturers continually pushing the envelope in performance and technology. However, the Grand Sport appears poised to challenge this status quo, offering a compelling blend of American muscle, track-ready capability, and everyday usability. We have a remarkably clear picture of where the Grand Sport will land in terms of pricing, performance metrics, and market positioning. Drawing from our extensive experience with every C8 variant that has preceded it, we can even anticipate its driving characteristics with a high degree of confidence. This leaves us eagerly awaiting the opportunity to get behind the wheel and experience it firsthand. The 2026 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport and Grand Sport X represent what could be the most compelling way yet to experience the essence of Corvette’s most extraordinary models, without the substantial financial commitment required for a Z06, ZR1, or ZR1X.
