While some drivers may miss the visceral sound of a traditional internal combustion engine, Porsche’s synthesized Electric Sound does an admirable job of replicating the character of its V8 models, adding an auditory dimension to the driving experience. The physical presence of the Cayenne Electric is undeniable. A wheelbase stretch of 5.1 inches over non-electric models, combined with the weight of the battery pack, makes it a substantial vehicle. However, the advanced suspension and torque vectoring systems work tirelessly to mitigate this. The result is a vehicle that corners with a flatness that belies its size. It’s an uncanny sensation to experience such a large SUV leaning so little through corners, whether at low or high speeds. With approximately half the horsepower of the Turbo, no Active Ride system, and a less sophisticated rear motor, the base model naturally doesn’t offer the same extreme level of performance. There’s more body lean when navigating tight corners, and the acceleration, while still strong, is less explosive. Porsche quotes a 0-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds with launch control for the base model (with a temporary boost to 435 horsepower and 615 lb-ft of torque), while the mid-range Cayenne S Electric is listed at 3.6 seconds. In comparison, the Cayenne Turbo Electric manages a manufacturer-quoted 2.4-second 0-60 mph time, which we believe is conservative. Despite the differences in ultimate performance, the base Cayenne Electric remains a joy to drive. Its brakes feel every bit as responsive and powerful as those in the Turbo, and its ride quality is equally composed and comfortable in around-town driving. The base model demonstrates that even without the most advanced technology, the Cayenne platform provides a solid foundation for a capable and enjoyable electric SUV. However, for those seeking the ultimate in performance and handling, the Turbo model is the clear choice, albeit at a significant premium. The Heart of the Electric Cayenne: Battery and Charging All variants of the 2026 Porsche Cayenne Electric share a substantial 113.0-kWh gross lithium-ion battery pack, of which 108.0 kWh is usable. This pack is integrated into the floor of the vehicle, contributing to its low center of gravity and enhancing its handling dynamics. Based on our prior experience with Porsche’s electric models and our evaluation of a Cayenne Electric prototype, we anticipate an EPA-rated range of over 300 miles, with our prototype achieving 350 miles in testing. Charging performance is also expected to align with Porsche’s estimates, with the 10-80% charging window taking anywhere from 16 to 26 minutes depending on the charger’s power output. These figures position the Cayenne Electric as a genuinely practical choice for long-distance travel, addressing a key concern for potential EV buyers. Beyond the Pavement: Off-Road Prowess Since its inception, the Porsche Cayenne has been marketed as a versatile SUV capable of handling various terrains, and Porsche is keen to ensure that the electric versions carry on this legacy. To demonstrate the Cayenne Electric’s off-road capabilities, Porsche enlisted the help of factory driver and endurance racing champion Timo Bernhard. We had the thrilling opportunity to ride shotgun with Bernhard for two laps on a rallycross track. What ensued was a masterclass in car control. Bernhard put the Cayenne Electric through its paces, sliding, bounding, and cornering with a precision that highlighted the vehicle’s off-road potential. It was a visceral demonstration of what this SUV can do when pushed to its limits, reminiscent of the legendary Group B rally cars of the past. Bernhard himself noted that the power delivery and torque management were among the most impressive aspects of the experience.
